Orientation and Mobility for Adults

Orientation and Mobility (O&M) is a proven program and method, designed specifically for people who are blind or vision impaired, to build increased capacity for safe, effective, and independent travel.

An individualised program of O&M instruction, aims to provide you with the essential skills, strategies, and equipment, to be able to move around more safely, effectively, efficiently, confidently, and independently.  People who are blind or vision impaired often find that this is a highly effective way to enhance their personal well-being, safety, independence, confidence and community participation.

O&M instruction can provide you with a comprehensive range of practical skills and strategies such as:

• using all your senses for enhanced orientation and safer mobility
• crossing roads safely, effectively, efficiently, and confidently
• negotiating stairs and obstacles
• developing an increased awareness of your body position/movement
• time management
• route planning
• using public transport effectively
• problem-solving
• use of equipment such as white mobility canes, GPS, travel apps, ultrasonic devices
• accepting and rejecting assistance from family, friends, and the general public
• understanding the link between independence, dependence, and interdependence.

I’ve had O&M services before

If you have had O&M services before, you may not need a full assessment and/or program (unless you would like one!). You might like to try one of the following:

  • arrange with us to review a new travel route that you would like to use
  • have us check out the layout of a new environment e.g. uni campus, gym or workplace and then receive orientation to that space
  • organise for us to assess a travel route or section of a travel route that is causing you problems e.g. a particular crossing, a roundabout, a bus interchange
  • receive some instruction when your environment has changed e.g. a railway station you use has been upgraded; your regular supermarket’s layout has changed; an intersection you use has been modified
  • receive instruction if your  situation has changed e.g. a friend or family member who was providing support is no longer available; you move house; your vision has deteriorated; you are waiting for a new dog guide
  • you want to brush up on your O&M skills.

These are just some of the things that our clients have requested.

Please contact us to discuss your specific situation.

I haven’t had O&M services before

If you have not had O&M services before, we would recommend a full O&M assessment, prior to commencing an O&M program.  An O&M assessment is an opportunity for us to work together to understand:

  • the physical /social environments you are currently using or would like to use
  • your current travel skills and strategies
  • your goals, strengths and preferred learning style.

A Blind Focus O&M assessment will provide us with useful information to design an effective and meaningful O&M program for you.

Please contact us to discuss your specific situation.

i have a disability other than blindness/vision impairment

Blind Focus also works with people who are living with disabilities other than blindness and vision impairment.  Many of the techniques and strategies of O&M can be highly relevant to anyone living with a disability.  We find that many people who are receiving some type of travel training or community participation program are able to benefit from a Blind Focus O&M program.

Blind Focus can improve the quality of your travel training and community participation, by making sure that you develop skills, strategies and confidence for independent, safe and effective travel.

Please contact us to discuss your specific situation.
